What are your first impressions?
I admit - I was pretty skeptical of Notion for a while. But, I kept seeing it pop up on Indie Hackers as an app people couldn't live without. So, I tried it. Honestly, I still wasn't too impressed because to me it looks like an older app and the design feels rough in a way that it shouldn't. Well, I am sure that doesn't make sense. But, honestly, once my eyes get adjusted to it, then I fall i love with it.
What are the first actions you take?
Maybe the design of the app didn't impress me right away, but the design of the website sure does. I read a blog post on Figma about how the owners spent a ton of time using Figma to collaborate - it shows. Also, it kinda has a Figma type aurora to the design. I'm not really sure what that even means, but it does. Prove me wrong. 😂 Maybe even a semi material design? Anyways, first thing I do is navigate around the homepage, enjoying the design. I come across the Live demo "click to play" - wow, what an awesome feature that gets you trying out the app with practically no friction whatsoever. This is one of the best features I've seen on a marketing site. I move further down the page and hit the testimonial section. I love the placement of these tiles; it feels like a artful mosaic somehow.
- Q3: Who do you believe the target audience is?
- Q4: Do you find the product desirable?
What would you change about the website?
- One thing that keeps getting me is the top nav, when you scroll down it goes into a fixed state, then I click on a link, then the top nav goes to a different state when at the top of the page. Essentially, I want to quickly click a nav item again, but the placement moved so I then have to search for the nav link - it got me a couple times and I'm not trying to move quickly through the site or anything, just casual browsing
- Not much else - the site is great and I love the consistent theme, minimalism, and delights that I encounter
What would you change about the app?
For me, I just needed to get used to the app a bit. In a lot of ways, it is similar to Microsoft OneNote, but in some ways the design seems older than OneNote but in many ways, it floors OneNote. Once I got used to the GUI, pretty much everything I've felt like I should be able to easily do, I am easily able to do it and often that surprises me and often it's easier than I thought it'd be. Great work!
