Questions
  • Q1: What are your first impressions?
    ARMiedema ARMiedema

Basecamp is definitely playing the work from home because of COVID-19 card these days. The homepage is almost dedicated to its remote work usefulness.

  • Q2: What are the first actions you take?
    ARMiedema ARMiedema

I take a look through the homepage and then browse the top nav sections. Overall, the website is very text centric in terms of design aesthetics.

  • Q3: What was your journey navigating the site like? Does the flow make sense?
    ARMiedema ARMiedema

The journey is so-so. It's not necessarily difficult to navigate around, it's more so the overuse of fonts and highlighting fonts that's a bit hard on the eyes which degrades the user experience for me a bit. Otherwise, there isn't much site hierarchy so you can find what you need relatively quick.

  • Q4: Who do you believe the target audience is?
    ARMiedema ARMiedema

    Small teams; remote teams

  • Q5: What do you believe a reasonable price is and what do you believe a high price is?
    ARMiedema ARMiedema

The pricing is reasonable. In fact, the pricing calculus and comparison is probably one of the stronger, well hit messaging pieces of the front-end site.

  • Q6: Do you find the product desirable?
    ARMiedema ARMiedema

I find the idea desirable. I've been in product management for many years and Basecamp has come up from time-to-time; mostly by designers interestingly enough who really seem to love Basecamp. I've never had the opportunity to really get in and check it out until recently. You can get a lot out of Basecamp and it is pretty good for small teams of maybe 1 - 3 people. Any more than that, then it degrades apart pretty quickly. Though, I believe that is intended from what I've read in the books the owners have published.

  • Q7: What would you change about the website?
    ARMiedema ARMiedema
    • The website feels congested - text stacked on text. And texts of drastically ranging font sizes, weights, and highlights. If used sparingly, it would be brilliant. But, the usage is overdone and decreases the overall scanability and readability.
  • Q8: What would you change about the app?
    ARMiedema ARMiedema
    • The App feels old to me; like it was made in 2010 and never updated
    • Reduce the number of clicks to get somewhere; it often takes 5 clicks just to get to the doc I'm interested in; and then another 5 clicks to edit, save, and share...
